We value clear responsive communication when explaining the sometimes complicated tax and fiduciary issues related to a Trust. A Trust is only as good as its Trustee, and we strive to provide the best possible Trustee service.

Our History

Champlain Trust was formed in 2014 by two experienced trust and tax attorneys to provide truly independent and responsive professional Trustee services to wealthy and entrepreneurial families, as an alternative to other institutional Trustees.

To date, we have grown by word-of-mouth to approximately $250 million in assets under
management. Our hope is to attract a limited number of new Trusts. Champlain Trust has offices in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Bio:

Scott has been practicing in the Burlington area for almost 30 years, concentrating in the areas of Estate Planning and Probate, and Residential and Commercial Real Estate. Scott grew up in Connecticut and graduated from Syracuse University in 1987 with a B.S. in Television, Radio, and Film and graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1995, where he was a founding member of the University of Connecticut Insurance Law Journal.

When not practicing law, he can be found at home working on a follow-up to his critically acclaimed CD of instrumental guitar music or on the fairways of Vermont in a pair of plus fours working on his hickory golf game.

Peter M. Doremus, Esq. is a retired attorney and founder of Champlain Trust. Peter was the founding partner of the law firm currently known as Doremus Kantor & Zullo in Burlington, Vermont. Peter is a consultant with Champlain Trust, and he currently resides in Savannah, Georgia.

Bio:

Steven E. Schindler, Esq., CPA is the Manager and founder of Champlain Trust. He was born and raised in Annapolis, Maryland. He graduated with a B.S. in Accounting and Business Administration from California State University, San Bernadino. Steve has been a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) since 1990. He graduated from Vermont Law School, magna cum laude, in 1994. Steve has managed the Schindler Law Office, PLC since 2005, and he is admitted to practice law in Vermont and New Hampshire. Steve is Of Counsel with the Doremus Kantor & Zullo law firm in Burlington, Vermont. Steve is a Certified Trust and Financial Advisor (CTFA) accredited through the American Bankers Association.
